Located in the prestigious Ennismore Gardens within the Kingston House Estate, Knightsbridge, this Grade II listed property sits on Exhibition Road, moments from Hyde Park and the Royal Albert Hall. The client approached us to replace deteriorating single-glazed windows with completely new bespoke timber windows – including brand-new frames, sashes, and double-glazing – while preserving the building’s Victorian character and meeting strict conservation area requirements.
We supplied and installed bespoke timber sash windows with slimline double-glazing and oak bifold doors, dramatically improving thermal insulation, eliminating drafts, and enhancing security. The sash windows feature two glazing bar sizes – 16mm on the front facade and 20mm on the rear – finished in a striking dual-colour scheme of white internally and black externally. The bifold doors were finished with translucent lazure paint, revealing the natural wood grain while colour-matched to complement the timber flooring planned for later installation. A particular challenge was preserving and reinstalling the original architraves, which we carefully removed, restored, and refitted to maintain historical authenticity. The result: a beautifully balanced restoration combining heritage craftsmanship with modern comfort in one of London’s most exclusive addresses.
Key specifications
- Timber: Windows crafted in Meranti paired with hardwood Sapele cill for exceptional stability in varying weather conditions and natural resistance to decay. Bifold doors made entirely from oak timber to match the flooring wood grain.
- Design: The sash windows feature external horns and 16mm (front) & 20mm (rear) Ovolo applied glazing bars with infill, replicating the look of traditional construction bars.
- Glazing: 12mm slimline double-glazed, Argon-filled Low-E safety glass units for windows provide slim sightlines suitable for listed buildings while dramatically improving U-values. VSG safety laminated glass for bifold doors offers enhanced security against forced entry and accidental breakage.
- Paint: Windows finished in a durable three-coat system with dual-colour specification: RAL 9005 Jet Black externally and RAL 9010 Pure White internally, ensuring long-term protection and striking visual impact. Bifold doors finished with translucent lazure paint, colour-matched to complement planned timber flooring installation.
- Ironmongery: Polished brass Mighton ironmongery including Angel Ventlock restrictors paired with brass-finish Brio bifold door hardware, complemented with Mila polished gold handles, creating a cohesive and refined aesthetic across all products.
